Kim Philby And James Angleton Spies And Traitors: Kim Philby James Angleton And The Friendship And Betrayal That Would Shape MI6 The CIA And The Cold War

Kim Philby was one of the most notorious spies in history. A high-ranking intelligence officer in the British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6),he was also a double agent working for the Soviet Union. His betrayal of his country and colleagues had a profound impact on the Cold War, and the story of his friendship and betrayal with James Angleton, the CIA's legendary counterintelligence chief, is one of the most fascinating and complex in the annals of espionage.

Philby and Angleton first met in 1944, when Philby was working as a liaison officer with the American Office of Strategic Services (OSS),the precursor to the CIA. Angleton was a young counterintelligence officer who was immediately impressed by Philby's charm, wit, and intelligence. The two men quickly became friends, and they would remain close for many years.

In 1949, Philby was transferred to Washington, D.C., to work as a liaison officer with the CIA. Angleton was now the head of the CIA's counterintelligence division, and he was eager to work with Philby. The two men spent many hours together, discussing intelligence matters and sharing their mutual admiration for the Soviet Union.

However, in 1951, Philby was recalled to London after it was discovered that he had been passing secrets to the Soviets. Angleton was devastated by the news, but he refused to believe that Philby was a traitor. He continued to defend Philby, even after Philby defected to the Soviet Union in 1963.

Angleton's obsession with Philby would eventually lead to his downfall. In the 1960s, he became increasingly convinced that the CIA was infiltrated by Soviet agents. He launched a series of witch hunts, which resulted in the firing of many innocent employees. In 1974, Angleton was finally forced to resign from the CIA.

The story of Kim Philby and James Angleton is a tragedy of friendship and betrayal. It is a reminder that even the closest relationships can be destroyed by the corrosive power of ideology.

Ben Macintyre's book, Kim Philby, James Angleton, and the Friendship and Betrayal that Shaped MI6, is a gripping account of this extraordinary story. Macintyre draws on a wealth of new sources to provide a nuanced and insightful portrait of two of the most enigmatic figures in the history of espionage.
