The Gathering of Patriots

On October 19, 1774, a vast throng of New Yorkers gathered at the Exchange in lower Manhattan. Merchants, artisans, laborers, and men of all walks of life came together to voice their grievances against British rule. The meeting was chaired by Isaac Low, a prominent merchant and ardent patriot.

In Philadelphia, a similar gathering took place on the same day at the State House (now Independence Hall). Over three thousand people assembled to hear impassioned speeches by John Dickinson, Thomas Mifflin, and other leading citizens.

On October 25, the people of Baltimore convened at the courthouse. Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer, a delegate to the Continental Congress, presided over the meeting. Resolutions were passed pledging support for the Continental Congress and its efforts to secure the rights of the colonies.

Echoes of Defiance

The proceedings of these mass meetings reveal the deep-seated grievances and determination of the American people. The participants denounced the oppressive measures imposed by the British Parliament, including the Intolerable Acts. They demanded the restoration of their constitutional rights and the recognition of their status as free and equal subjects of the British Crown.

The speeches delivered at these meetings were both eloquent and defiant. John Dickinson declared, "Let us not be deceived by the wicked suggestions of those who would persuade us that we are aiming at independence. We are not. We are only seeking to preserve our just rights."

Thomas Mifflin proclaimed, "We are determined to die or be free. We will never submit to slavery."

A Call to Action

The Patriotic Mass Meetings were not merely expressions of dissent but also calls to action. The participants resolved to support the Continental Congress and its efforts to defend the rights of the colonies. They formed committees of correspondence to coordinate their activities with other cities and towns.

The proceedings of these meetings were widely circulated throughout the colonies, galvanizing public opinion and inspiring a wave of resistance to British tyranny.

A Pivotal Moment

The Patriotic Mass Meetings held by the Americans of New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore were a pivotal moment in the American Revolution. They demonstrated the widespread support for the cause of independence and the growing determination of the American people to break free from British rule.

The proceedings of these meetings provide a valuable historical record of this momentous period. They offer insights into the grievances, aspirations, and unwavering patriotism of the American people as they embarked on the path to revolution.

"Proceedings At The Patriotic Mass Meeting Held By The Americans Of The City Of New York, Philadelphia, And Baltimore" is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of the American Revolution. It is a captivating narrative that transports the reader back to those fateful days when the seeds of independence were sown. Through its pages, we can witness the passion, determination, and unwavering patriotism that fueled the American struggle for freedom.
