By David Glantz

In his groundbreaking new book, How the War Was Won and Lost, acclaimed historian David Glantz offers a fresh and provocative perspective on the Second World War. Drawing on a wealth of new archival research, Glantz argues that the Allied victory was not inevitable, and that the Axis powers could have won the war if they had made different strategic decisions.

Glantz begins his book by examining the early years of the war, when the Axis powers seemed poised to conquer all of Europe. He shows how the German blitzkrieg tactics overwhelmed the French and British armies, and how the Japanese rapidly conquered vast swaths of Asia. But Glantz also argues that the Axis powers made a number of strategic mistakes that ultimately led to their defeat.

One of the most important mistakes, according to Glantz, was the German decision to invade the Soviet Union in June 1941. This invasion opened up a second front for Germany, and it stretched the German army to its breaking point. The Soviet Union was able to absorb the German onslaught, and it eventually launched a massive counteroffensive that drove the Germans back to Berlin.

Another major mistake made by the Axis powers was their failure to develop a coherent strategy for dealing with the United States. The United States entered the war in December 1941, and it quickly became the dominant Allied power. The Axis powers were never able to develop a plan to defeat the United States, and this ultimately led to their defeat.

Glantz concludes his book by arguing that the Allied victory in the Second World War was a close-run thing. If the Axis powers had made different strategic decisions, they could have won the war. Glantz's book is a must-read for anyone interested in the Second World War and its impact on the world.
