John Kenneth Galbraith (1908-2006) was an American economist, author, and diplomat. He was a prominent figure in the Keynesian economics movement and served as an economic adviser to President John F. Kennedy. Galbraith was also a prolific writer, publishing over 30 books on economics, politics, and social issues. His most famous work is The Affluent Society (1958),which criticized the materialism and inequality of American society.

Galbraith was born in Iona Station, Ontario, Canada. He received his B.A. from the University of Toronto in 1931 and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1934. After teaching at Harvard University and Princeton University, Galbraith joined the Office of Price Administration during World War II. In 1946, he was appointed director of the Office of Economic Stabilization.

Galbraith served as an economic adviser to President John F. Kennedy from 1961 to 1963. He was a strong advocate for Keynesian economics, which emphasizes the role of government spending in stimulating economic growth. Galbraith also criticized the military-industrial complex and the power of big business.

After leaving the Kennedy administration, Galbraith continued to write and teach. He was a professor of economics at Harvard University from 1964 to 1975. Galbraith also served as the U.S. ambassador to India from 1985 to 1988.

Galbraith was a brilliant economist and a gifted writer. His work has had a profound impact on our understanding of economics and society. He was a tireless advocate for social justice and economic equality.

Here are some of Galbraith's most famous quotes:

  • "The modern corporation is a monument to the power of the human mind. It is also a monument to the power of human greed."
  • "The only function of economic forecasting is to make astrology look respectable."
  • "The only way to deal with the economic system is to control it. The only way to control it is to understand it."
  • "The affluent society has reached a point where the pursuit of happiness is no longer the driving force of economic activity. Instead, the driving force is the pursuit of status."
  • "The trouble with our times is that the future is not what it used to be."

Galbraith was a complex and contradictory figure. He was a brilliant economist, but he was also a harsh critic of capitalism. He was a strong advocate for social justice, but he was also a realist who understood the limits of government action. Galbraith was a man of great wit and charm, but he could also be sharp-tongued and abrasive.

Despite his contradictions, Galbraith was one of the most influential economists of the 20th century. His work helped to shape our understanding of economics and society. He was a tireless advocate for social justice and economic equality. Galbraith was a man of great intellect and integrity. He will be remembered as one of the most important thinkers of our time.
