Book Description

Bile acids are synthesized in the liver and play a critical role in the digestion and absorption of fats. They are also involved in various other physiological processes, including liver function, inflammation, and immunity. Bile acids can be classified into two types: primary bile acids, which are synthesized from cholesterol in the liver, and secondary bile acids, which are formed from primary bile acids by bacterial enzymes in the gut.

Bile acids have been implicated in the pathogenesis of a variety of gastrointestinal diseases, including liver disease, cholestasis, cholestatic liver disease, primary biliary cholangitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, biliary atresia, bile acid malabsorption, diarrhea, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and cholangiocarcinoma.

The third volume of Bile Acids in Gastroenterology provides a comprehensive overview of bile acids and their role in various aspects of gastrointestinal physiology and disease. The book is divided into three sections: basic science, clinical science, and translational research.
