Prehistoric Roots: The Iron Age

The earliest evidence of military activity in Sussex dates back to the Iron Age, around 800 BC. During this period, hillforts were constructed as strategic strongholds for local tribes. These fortified settlements, such as the Iron Age hillfort at Cissbury Ring, provided protection against invaders and served as centers of community life.

Roman Conquest and Legacy

In 43 AD, the Roman legions arrived in Sussex, bringing with them new military technologies and tactics. The Romans established a series of forts and roads throughout the region, including the impressive fortress at Pevensey Bay. These fortifications played a crucial role in maintaining Roman control over Sussex and securing the southern coast of England.

Anglo-Saxon Settlement and the Battle of Hastings

Following the collapse of the Roman Empire, Sussex was settled by Anglo-Saxon tribes in the 5th century AD. These settlers brought with them their own military traditions and established defended settlements known as burhs. In 1066, Sussex became the stage for one of the most significant battles in English history: the Battle of Hastings.

This pivotal conflict, fought on October 14th, 1066, saw the Norman army led by William the Conqueror defeat the Anglo-Saxon forces under King Harold Godwinson. The battle marked the end of Anglo-Saxon rule in England and the beginning of the Norman period.

Medieval Castles and Coastal Defenses

After the Norman Conquest, Sussex became a strategic frontier county. To protect the region from invasion, the Normans constructed a series of stone castles, including Arundel Castle and Lewes Castle. These fortifications served as centers of military power and played a crucial role in suppressing local rebellions and defending the coast from Viking raids.

The English Civil War

During the English Civil War (1642-1651),Sussex became a battleground between the Royalists and Parliamentarians. The county saw several significant battles, including the Battle of Lewes in 1642 and the Battle of Preston in 1648. The outcome of these conflicts ultimately resulted in the Parliamentarian victory and the establishment of the Commonwealth.

Coastal Defenses in Modern Times

With its strategic position on the English Channel, Sussex has always been a vital region for coastal defense. In the 19th century, a series of coastal fortifications were constructed to protect the region from potential invasion, including the prominent Palmerston Forts designed by Lord Palmerston. These forts played a crucial role in defending the coast during both World Wars.

World Wars and the Cold War

Sussex played a significant role in both World Wars. During World War I, the county was home to a number of military camps and training grounds, including the Shoreham Camp and the Brighton Camp. In World War II, Sussex was targeted by German bombing raids, including the heavy bombing of Brighton in 1940.

During the Cold War, Sussex was home to several military installations, including the RAF Tangmere and the NATO base at Southwick House. These bases played a vital role in Britain's defense during the Cold War era.
